Miami, FL – February 8, 2025 – Recreational marijuana in Florida faces an uphill battle as Gov. Ron DeSantis vows to keep it out of the state constitution.
After defeating the 2024 legalization initiative, DeSantis dismissed a newly filed 2026 proposal, arguing that cannabis policy should be left to lawmakers, not enshrined in the constitution. He claimed the measure would struggle to gain approval from the Florida Supreme Court and likened it to adding “pregnant pig care” to the U.S. Bill of Rights.
Meanwhile, DeSantis is pushing for stricter ballot initiative rules, including limiting petition collection methods, making it harder for voters to amend the constitution. Instead, he urged Floridians to elect legislators who align with their views on marijuana policy.
