YoungArts Presents Romeo & Juliet Outside the Box
Miami, FL – May 8, 2015 – The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) presented Romeo & Juliet Outside the Box, which was created and directed by playwright, MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and YoungArts Alumnus Tarell Alvin McCraney (1999 YoungArts Winner in Theater), along with filmmaker and fellow YoungArts Alumnus Andrew Hevia (2003 YoungArts Winner in Cinematic Arts). Inspired by the story of Romeo & Juliet, this free interactive evening brought together some of Miami’s electric performance artists, including Miami City Ballet dancers Jovani Furlan, Emily Bromberg and Kelly Robotham; Flipside Kings members Rudi Goblen (Founding member of Teo Castellanos/D Projects) and Charlie Chizo; New World School of Arts Alumnus Eddie Brown (1988 YoungArts Winner in Theater) and Harris Milgrim; Gentry George (2008 YoungArts Winner in Dance) from the Peter London Global Dance Collective and more. Created specifically for the YoungArts Campus, the lovers’ doomed affair found itself nestled into the heart of one of Miami’s most iconic spaces, the YoungArts Jewel Box. More than 600 individuals attended the event, which also served as the kick off for Miami Museum Month. Guests enjoyed concessions by Stephen Starr Events, and visited the apothecary bar which featured craft cocktails, and was part of one of the scenes. Outside the Box is sponsored by ArtPlace America, a national consortium that funds significant projects that use art and culture for creative place making to shape their communities’ social, physical and economic futures. Additional support for Outside the Box is provided by The Miami Foundation, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, The Children’s Trust, and IKEA.
