Q&A: Inside the Office with Matthew Chevallard
Miami, FL – March 23, 2018 – World Red Eye takes you inside one of Miami’s hottest art galleries, the Office. Matt McCormick and Thrush Holmes exhibition is now at the Office Miami, presented by Matthew Chevallard and Daniel Berkowitz. Thrush hailing from Canada and Matt from Los Angeles are having their first show in Miami and were excited to highlight both these amazing artists at the Office. “After being passionate collector and constantly being asked for by friends to help with art teamed up with my close friend Danny who also is a young collector to start a platform/ collective for introducing artists to friends and family. The office is a offering of emerging artists I believe in and have collected personally.” said Mathew Chevallard. Thrush Holmes is Toronto based and creates diverse compositions in the form of several disciplines ranging from abstract painting to photographic-based mixed-media. His most recent body of work integrates painting, collage and neon. Experimentation plays a big part in the creative process, therefore he works mostly on panel when he paints as opposed to canvas – “This allows me to scrape off the loss and reclaim the substrate for a new life.” Holmes typically chooses subject matter that draws from familiar art motifs such as still life, nudes, and landscape. He is particularly interested in elevating subjects that are seemingly traditional and common to something seductive and unusual. Matt McCormick is a multimedia artist born in San Francisco in 1987. the Office is an Art Gallery located in Edgewater area of Miami, Florida. Close to Wynwood and Design District, the Office. The gallery showcases art in a variety of mediums. World Red Eye spoke with Matthew Chevallard, to dive deeper into what the office is all about.
WRE: What inspired you to open an art gallery aside from your store Del Toro?
MC: I decided to open an art gallery to create a platform of accessible and emerging art for friends and family among other things. There is an increasing desire and need to get people to care more about art. Not only that, but help customers who are looking for the right art at the right price. In Miami, I wanted to help fill a void for of necessarily not having a lot of art purveyors despite a pretty large art collector community. For over ten years I’ve been collecting art, so opening the Office has expanded my collections to the public, I’ve also grown my relationships and have learned a lot of new experiences in the art community.
WRE: Is there a specific reason you choose “The Office” as a name for the gallery?
MC: We wanted it to be casual and fun and also something natural. After all, its where we do work so we thought the name is fitting. Its simple yet intriguing.
WRE: Does the artwork in your gallery revolve around a certain theme?
MC: Other then great art, not at all – the goal is a wide breadth so for every show we try to bring something for everyone to enjoy. This show we have Americana and a very masculine offering in Matt McCormick with a very Miami as well as fun and intriguing offering in Thrush Holmes. Both the artists are really great and talented guys who are quickly gaining traction for their style and offerings. Both artists have a very strong Instagram audience, which is so pivotal for artists in todays day and age. Matt has an amazing show coming up at Darrow Gallery in Aspen this summer. Where Thrush is working closely with UTA and is rumored to have a show there in the near future at their gallery space in Downtown LA.
WRE: How does the selection process work for your gallery?
MC: The art at the Office comes from artists I collect and or believe in. Theres a lot of art out there, curating the right artist, and right work is easier said then done. My partner Danny Berkowitz and I put our name and over ten years of collecting behind the work we show. We need to find artists that are established yet, relatively unfound. We also need to find artists that provide a great style of work while still being accessible.
WRE: Why did you choose Edgewater for the location of the gallery?
MC: Edgewater is such a new and upcoming neighborhood we really love our space. We wanted to be close to to the art district, but also have our own unique identity so the place was extremely fitting.
WRE: Would your success inspire you to have different locations around the U.S? If so, where?
MC: Yes, we intend todo pop-ups in the Hamptons this summer and potentially evaluate NYC as well.
