Miami, FL – June 21, 2017 – Miami Design District, Island Planning Corporation (IPC), and Fairchild Tropical Botanic gathered to plant 500 rare Florida orchids at Paseo Ponti as part of the Million Orchid Project (MOP), an ongoing conservation initiative to grow one million rare, native orchids and reintroduce them to South Florida’s urban spaces. The ceremony marked the start of a two-year program to plant native orchids in trees and plots in select areas in the Miami Design District. The orchids will be part of a sweeping, large-scale horticultural installation by IPC of several-hundred specimen trees. Miami Design District is the first neighborhood destination to partner with Fairchild in the Million Orchid Project.

In attendance were Miami Design District Staff; Fairchild staff, Director Dr. Carl Lewis, Director of Education Amy Padolf, and Million Orchid Project Orchid Biologist Dr. Jason Downing; Island Planning Corporation representatives included Principal Nathan Browning and members of the community.
