Fort Lauderdale, FL – October 11, 2014 – On Saturday, NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale hosted an elegant patrons reception for its upper level members and other invited guests to celebrate the opening of the exhibition Café Dolly: Picabia, Schnabel, Willumsen. Café Dolly brings together the work of American artist Julian Schnabel (b. 1951), French artist Francis Picabia (1879-1953) and Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863-1958) for the first time in the United States. More than 75 paintings by the three artists are featured in NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s first and second floor galleries. World-renowned artist Julian Schnabel was the evening’s guest of honor and on hand to mingle with attendees throughout fete. Schnabel’s paintings from the late 1980s to the present, including woks on a collaged surface of broken plates, resin-coated figurative paintings, enormous canvases based on paintings found in thrift stores, and paintings that conflate figuration and abstraction are featured in the exhibition. Bonnie Clearwater, NSU Museum of Art Director and Chief Curator welcomed the evening’s guests who viewed the exhibition and enjoyed cocktails on the museum’s second floor terrace as well as a violin performance by Tatyana Lisovskaya. The reception kicked off a weekend of special events at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, which included a sold-out talk by Julian Schnabel at the museum.
