Piotr Uklanski: ESL at Bass Museum of Art
Miami Beach, FL – December 4, 2013 – Popping up at the Bass Museum of Art during Art Basel Miami Beach was PIOTR UKLANSKI: ESL, which will remain at the museum until March 16, 2014. The multi-media artist (paper, tie-dye, fiber, resin, paint, photography, performance and film) presents ESL, English as a Second Language, an exhibition that refers to his own immigrant status in America, as well as the broad scope of his work to address the themes of identity politics. The title is a metaphor for his art practice, as well, with the exhibition illustrating the relationship between a non-native speaker’s accent and aesthetics found in his “meta-painting” practice. In his work, he celebrates moments of cultural and artistic disconnect, which are reflected in fiber art sculpture. Untitled (Story of the Eye) illustrates an enormous abstracted eyeball crafted from layers of dyed rope, fiber, macramé and embroidery. The work references Georges Bataille’s Novella, through its ocular allusion, which is impactful, erotic and theatrical. Uklański both lives and works in New York and Warsaw, Poland.
