Miami, FL – December 2, 2024 – AIRIE (Artists in Residence in Everglades) partnered with Woven and Art Basel Miami Beach for a special event in celebration of Miami Art Week 2024. Invited guests arrived at The Carter Project for a reception and a homecoming presentation of “Elements of Being” which debuted in April 2024 in Venice as a part of “Personal Structures” at the European Cultural Center.
“Elements of Being” is a powerful collaboration aimed at inspiring collective action for environmental, social, and racial justice. The installation offers an affirming space where diverse narratives and underrepresented voices intersected, fostering meaningful dialogue on climate change. Through a blend of choral music, painting, opera, performance, and dance, the work highlights the transformative power of intersectional storytelling.
Guests were excited to witness the debut performance of “Chant,” choreographed by AIRIE residency alumnus Gentry George and featuring dancers Nicole Pedraza and Carlos Realegeno in a piece that delves into humanity’s toxic and inescapable relationship with both the environment and one another.
Additionally for the occasion, artist and 2023 AIRIE Indigenous Fellow Diana Eusebio presents Itla-Okla, an installation inspired by yellow dyes from Itla-Okla (Spanish Moss), a plant found native to Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Miami. The installation invites visitors to photograph themselves, offering a decolonial space to reimagine our connection to nature beyond white supremacy and Cartesian modes of thinking.
Guests in attendance included the event’s hosts and AIRIE board member Tracey Robertson-Carter and Christopher Carter, AIRIE Board Chair Riyaad Seecharan, AIRIE board members Tyler Emerson Dorsch and Zoe McKenzie, honorary trustee Alan Scott, AIRIE Global Artistic Director Cornelius Tulloch, AIRIE Consulting Director Heike Dempster, artists Suzi Alvarez, Jen Clay, Franky Cruz, Diana Eusebio, Christiane Peschek, Zoe Schweiger, misael soto and Asia Stewart, as well as Catherin Camargo, Clayton and Parker Carver, Marysella Castillo, Cathy Leff, Rain Lu, Erin Malone, Katherine and Dan Mikesell, and Hanoch Sheps.
