Miami, FL – October 26, 2024 – ICA Miami Culture Club hosted the unveiling of My First 25,000 Years on Earth, a solo exhibition of new works by Pepe Mar at David Castillo Gallery in the Miami Design District. Attendees were invited to imagine a spiral, reminiscent of the “spiral kiss” Mar had referenced in a 2022 talk at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art—where the coils were adjacent to each other, nestled side-by-side. My First 25,000 Years on Earth was a large-scale Gesamtkunstwerk, with each work comprising it encapsulating the spiral of Mar’s prismatic practice—its origins and its path forward. Most of the pieces served as poignant reflections on the artist’s history, reimagining the past and alchemizing the future into something entirely new. Thus, My First 25,000 Years on Earth allowed Mar to consider where he had been as he entered a new era; the rest of us, thankfully, got to accompany him.
