Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark: History, Music, & Performance at PAMM Miami & Member Lounge

Miami, FL – March 21, 2024 – Visitors flocked to Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) for a night of art, music, and performance. The night began with a private member tour of Spirit in the Land, a contemporary art exhibition that examines today’s urgent ecological concerns from a cultural perspective, demonstrating how intricately our identities and natural environments are intertwined. Members also enjoyed a Member Appreciation Lounge on the waterfront terrace, full of locally sourced herbal tea, crafted drinks, and bites.

Later in the evening, visitors enjoyed a night of conversation and music inspired by artist Gary Simmons’s sculptural installation, “Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark.” Reflecting on Black Miami performance histories from booming Overtown aka “Harlem of the South” through the development of the unique “Miami Bass” sound of the ‘80s, Filmmaker Marlon Johnson, DJ Jason Panton, and On-Air Radio Host Supa Cindy came together for a discussion moderated by Carla Hill. They explored the movements that shaped the unique sounds and performance venues of Miami with a special focus on the contributions of Caribbean culture.

The night ended with a sound clash battle. DJs Walshy Fire and Jason Panton teamed up to present an evening highlighting the Jamaican sound system experience. Jason of City Heat Sound and DJ KM of Prodigy Sound took the stage for some friendly competition.
