Miami, FL – October 13, 2022 – More than 100 of Miami’s community and social justice leaders gathered at the HistoryMiami Museum for a special VIP opening reception for Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow. The traveling exhibition, organized by the New-York Historical Society, highlights the long struggle of Black Americans for full rights as citizens. Notable Miami activists including Thelma Gibson, Lonnie Lawrence, Dorothy Jenkins Fields and Reverend Walter Richardson, who were interviewed for the special Miami section of the exhibition, were in attendance for the evening. Their interviews are part of an oral history project titled Stories of Resistance from Black Miami, that captured stories from Miami leaders and their fight for racial equity. Other notable guests at the opening included David Lawrence, Tamara Gant, Davenya Armstrong and Michael and Julie Weiser.
During the evening, guests were greeted by HistoryMiami’s new CEO Natalia Crujeiras, and enjoyed a curator-led tour by New-York Historical Society curator Lily Wong who flew into Miami for the special occasion. Cocktails for the event were sponsored by Bacardi. Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow, runs through February 12, 2023 at HistoryMiami Museum. Visit www.historymiami.org
