Miami Beach, FL – December 2, 2019 – Van Bavink Gallery Amsterdam hosted a rooftop reception to kick off Miami Art Week 2019 and celebrate the new solo presentation from Dutch artist De Winter on view at Scope Miami Beach 2019. The exhibition marks the first time the work has been shown in the United States. Guests gathered on the rooftop of The Redbury South Beach to meet the artist and his gallerists Ruben Bunder and Meier Boersma. Intrigued by current political and social themes, De Winter creates work that strides between collage and sculpture referencing inspiration drawn from the Pop Art, Arte Povera and Ready Made Art movements. Utilizing varied found objects, iconography and mixed mediums, De Winter’s compositions confront the viewer with contemporary themes and a sly, knowing humor. The work often provokes a sense of the absurd in tandem with a feeling of spirituality and calm reflection.

This dynamic is meant to stir an uneasy tension in the viewer. The balance of power and oppression is a theme oft explored in his work yielding creations that touch upon both reality and the myriad emotions at play in our modern world.

At Scope, Van Bavink Gallery will present 23 sculptural collage works from De Winter’s Diorama series alongside a series of signed photograph editions.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Harry De Winter (b.1949) is a self-taught artist who nurtured his practice in private for decades prior to his 2018 gallery debut. During those years he gained global acclaim and influence with a decades long media career in television and live-tv music productions for artists including Prince, U2, Tina Turner and Pink Floyd. His media career culminated with the founding of the leading European production company IDTV, which was sold Chrysalis ltd. in 2000. In recent years, he has devoted himself entirely to his art practice.

With studios in Amsterdam, Spain and the Dutch island of Bonaire, De Winter is inspired by the unique environs of each. His work is often a direct exploration of these three locales and site specific concerns. Work created in the Netherlands often explores social mores and the dynamics of power and sex. In contrast, those created in Spain and Bonaire present environmental and socio-political concerns as a dominant theme.

ABOUT VAN BAVINK GALLERY

Meier Boersma joined the gallery in 2011.

The name van Bavink is derived from classic Dutch literature. Bavink is a fictional figure in the novel “Titans’ by the Dutch writer Nescio. The character is a painter in the 1920’s that becomes part of the art world he so despises, meeting his end in a mental institution.
