Miami, FL – September 12, 2019 – The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) celebrated the opening of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition which presents works by artists exclusively from South Florida. MOCA enlisted Amy Galpin, Chief Curator of the Frost Art Museum, to curate this dynamic exhibition that was made possible in cooperation with Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs. MOCA was packed with art aficionados who browsed the exhibition while enjoying cocktails and canapés.

Guests had the opportunity to meet and greet with Collection Focus: Works on Paper from the 1960s – 1980s Curator Elizabeth Shannon, South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition Curator Amy Galpin, as well as the South Florida Cultural Consortium’s exhibiting artists. MOCA Executive Director Chana Sheldon was joined by MOCA Chairman William Lehman Jr. and his wife, Shirley Lehman, MOCA’s Board of Trustees Clark Reynolds, Marc Napolitano and Ruby Moise, Vice Mayor Carol Keys, the Green Family Foundation’s Executive Director Mireille Louis Charles, Kathryn Mikesell, Gary Ressler, Suzanne Delehanty, Perez Art Museum Curator Rene Morales, Art in Public Places Curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and Rosie Gordon Wallace. The South Florida Cultural Consortium is the largest government-sponsored grant program in the U.S. for artists living in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, and Martin Counties.

Hundreds of artists apply each year and are recognized with a grant and a major exhibition. This year’s exhibition at MOCA showcases 13 artists including: Nellie Appleby, Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Domingo Castillo, Jen Clay, Reginald O’Neal, Edison Peñafiel, Sebastian Ruiz, Jamilah Sabur, Katrina Sarah, Vivien Segel, Misael Soto, Amber Tutwiler, and Agustina Woodgate. Also on view at MOCA is Collection Focus: Works on Paper from the 1960s – 1980s, curated by Elizabeth Shannon, Ph.D., the first in a series of new explorations of MOCA’s permanent collection. This exhibition features artists working with paper that has been specifically produced for painting or printmaking, as well as artwork created with materials appropriated and repurposed from daily life.

The exhibition’s works include examples of Pop Art, Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, while some objects reflect a specific political moment or social concern. South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition and Collection Focus: Works on Paper from the 1960s – 1980s, accompanied by public programming, will be on view at MOCA through Oct. 20, 2019.
