Miami, FL – June 8, 2017 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) welcomed more than 750 visitors for the opening of On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, an exhibition showcasing a selection of works by Contemporary Cuban artists donated to the museum by philanthropist and renown collector Jorge M. Pérez—the majority from a recent gift of over 170 pieces, as well as works previously gifted to PAMM in 2012, and several recent acquisitions purchased with funds generously provided by Pérez. The exhibition is presented in three parts over the course of a year, and features a rich panorama of recent work produced by artists living both in Cuba and abroad. Both Pérez and PAMM support artists and believe artists are key to advancing critical dialogue. Artists bring their uniquely personal experiences to the discussion, including those that are difficult. This is what is vitally important about art—it allows for nuance, for reflection and for conversation. The evening of festivities kicked off with a private tour of the exhibition for sponsors, collectors and special guests, led by PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander. Artists from the exhibition, including Antonia Wright and Jorge & Larry, provided additional commentary about the works on view.
Following the tour, guests were invited to an intimate cocktail reception and dinner generously underwritten by Pomellato. Hosted in the museum’s third floor Hoffman Boardroom overlooking beautiful Biscayne Bay, the tropical-themed affair featured Cuban-inspired hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, as well as a delectable three-course meal and a special preview of the latest Pomellato collections. PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans made welcome remarks and honored Jorge and Darlene Pérez for their generosity, the artists for their passion, Ostrander for his vision of the exhibition, and sponsors for their support. The evening culminated with a live performance by Grammy-nominated Cuban-American singer CuCu Diamantes on the museum’s waterfront terrace, sponsored through the generosity of Related Group. The critically-acclaimed vocalist’s Latin grooves moved throngs of visitors to the dance floor. The evening’s notable guests included: Jorge and Darlene Pérez; Jorge Gonzalez, president and chief executive officer of City National Bank of Florida; Alain Huy, president of Kering Jewelry – Americas; and exhibition artists Juan Carlos Alom, José Bedia, Yoan Capote, Elizabet Cerviño, Tomás Esson, Roberto Fabelo, Teresita Fernández, jorge & larry, Sandra Ramos, Gory Rogelio López Marín, and Antonia Wright. On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection is organized by PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander. This exhibition is presented by City National Bank with additional support provided by Cidade Matarazzo, Crystal & Co., and Pomellato.
