Ross One

Miami Beach, FL – May 4, 2017 – As we draw closer and closer to our 7 year anniversary party on Saturday, we caught up with globetrotting table turner, DJ Ross One. From hanging out with celebs like Kanye West and Wilmer Valderama to DJing for major names such as Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z, Ross One has been around and seen a lot. World Red Eye took the time to look back at some of these moments with Ross One.

WRE: How did you begin your career as a DJ?

RO: I got my first turntable and mixer for my 16th birthday in Ohio. After that I started doing house parties and small bars a few years later. The rest is just a combination of practice, grinding and luck!

WRE: Is there one song you always play in your sets that gets everyone going?

RO: Depends on the party. With the rate that new music comes out now, that song is always changing.

WRE: What type of artists and music genres influence your career?

RO: I started out as a record collector mostly. So early on it was all funk, soul, disco. 90’s hip-hop got me into digging for records and I’ve always loved rap from that era.

WRE: Is there anyone that you would love to work with?

RO: Nobody specific, but I’m lucky to work with a lot of great artists and DJs that I admire.

Miami taught me how to do a whole night of slower tempo rap mixed with more uptempo house, ect. The goal is always to keep the crowd happy and dancing all night.

WRE: How would you describe your style?

RO: I try to be a combination of classic New York and Miami. Pretty fast mixing, I try to play songs in a way that sounds good and makes sense.. not all over the place, but covering a lot of genres. Miami taught me how to do a whole night of slower tempo rap mixed with more uptempo house, ect. The goal is always to keep the crowd happy and dancing all night.

WRE: What do you personally feel makes a perfect playlist?

RO: Just keep it moving. Knowing when to let songs run, and knowing when to play them is half the battle. A lot of times DJing is all about setting a pace for the night so people are partying from start to finish. Good playlists mix in a few surprises along with the go-to records.

WRE: Do you have a favorite photo that World Red Eye has taken of you?

RO: My favorite photo World Red Eye has taken of me has to be the photos from that 2011 Vegas NYE night. Seth was there front and center and captured the whole night. I have one of those photos hanging on the wall of my kitchen!

WRE: With World Red Eye capturing your best moments here in Miami, which one by far has been your most memorable?

RO: In Miami there have been so many memorable nights. From the old Mokai “Favela Beach” days, legendary nights at Mansion and Prive, to the opening of LIV. World Red Eye was there for all of em!
