#ShutItDown Rally Takes Over Wynwood
Miami, FL – December 5, 2014 – Some may criticize Miami for being more concerned with celebrity sightings and touring DJs than with current issues, but tonight they were proven wrong as hundreds of protesters took to the streets to make their message heard. The Shut It Down rallies, in response to the recent decisions by the grand juries not to indict police officers involved in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, strategically waited until the biggest week in Miami, Art Basel Week, causing massive delays in the already insane traffic surrounding the area. The protest which began on I-195, causing traffic to halt in both directions, migrated to Wynwood, culminating in protesters lying down between NW 1st Avenue and NW 36th Street. Protesters gave the nationwide rally a Miami twist by waving signs bearing the face of local graffiti artist Israel “Reefa” Hernandez that was fatally Tasered by Miami Beach Police. Gallerist and curator, Anthony Spinello, took a break from the Art Basel action to take part in this important moment.
