The Music of Art Basel
Kendrick Lamar
In its descent on Miami Beach, Art Basel brings with it paintings, sculptures, mixed media, photographs and public art. But in addition to its visual stimulation, the biggest art fair to land in the U.S. also yields art for your ears. Each year during Art Basel Miami Beach a host of concerts are leaked, publicized, rumored or scheduled, giving us the chance to experience live music in an arena unlike anywhere else in the world. In previous years, acts like Perry Farrell, Moby, Neon Indian and Metric have all taken the stage during the artful week. And this year was no exception. From Boy George doing a double-dose of concerts (one at Mana, the other at Mansion) to The Black Lips causing a full-on pool party at The Shore Club with their set, there was no lack of live music to keep those of us in South Florida entertained this week. Here is a look at what got us dancing during the latest edition of the art fair’s arrival.
Kendrick Lamar at MANA Wynwood
Though it started much later than anticipated, the crowd was willing to stick it out to hear the latest player in the hip-hop game, Kendrick Lamar, take the stage. The private concert in Wynwood, dubbed “Affordable Care,” came courtesy of Flaunt magazine, Wildfox, 3P Productions and MOCA North Miami. To give the concert an artist element, Vanessa Beecroft displayed her collaboration, a performance piece with Kanye West, who, it was rumored was slated to perform, but never showed. Nevertheless, the crowd still got an earful of Lamar’s latest.

Tegan And Sara at VH1 + SCOPE
For the second year, VH1 and Scope teamed up to bring music to the masses of Art Basel. This year, it was Canadian sisto duo Tegan and Sara, as well as DJ Cassidy. The indie two-some played favorites like “Walking With a Ghost” and “Closer.” The crowd raged at the art fair, which joined forces with VH1 in an attempt to bring new artists to the stage as part of its You Oughta Know series. Afterward, DJ Cassidy kept the party going with the crowd celebrating in a full on dance party in the sand.

Theophilus London & Austin Paul at Oddfellows Speakeasy
To mark its new arrival, Oddfellows Speakeasy, the pop-up bar at Sweetwater Beer Garden, hosted an intimate performance by Theophilus London. The rapper brought a few fans on stage and sang to them in his sweet, smooth tone. As a bonus, Austin Paul also took the stage for a performance that wooed the crowd. It was a sweet night under the stars and something the lucky attendees will carry with them for Basels to come.

And at the brand, spanking new museum, the singer crooned into the mic as the who’s who of the art world listened in.
