Little Sun at YoungArts
Miami, FL – December 5, 2013 – Joining forces with MOMA PS1 + The Fondation Beyeler, YoungArts presented Little Sun, a global project by Olafur Eliasson at the YoungArts Campus Gallery. The series consisted of short films created by 18 young, internationally acclaimed filmmakers from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America, who were invited by Eliasson and producer Tine Fischer to create films related to his Little Sun solar-powered lamp. The collection contains a range of formats and styles and was edited into short films by Jacob Thuesen, Eliasson, and Fischer, which illustrate the local color and flavor of each filmmakers space, which unites in terms of life, light and energy access. The short films were continuously screened throughout the duration of Art Basel Miami Beach at a kiosk created specifically for the project. The solar lamp in which the film is based was also for sale. Eliasson and engineer Ottesen developed the Little Sun solar-powered lamp to get clean, affordable light to the 1.6 billion people in the world without electricity. To date, Little Sun has produced 165,000 lamps and currently has distribution in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, Senegal, and South Africa, as well as in the EU, Japan, Australia, and the USA.
