Design Miami/ Preview & Vernissage 2013
Helen Lasichanh & Pharrell Williams
Miami Beach, FL – December 3, 2013 – Bringing art to interior design and interior design to Art Basel Miami Beach, Design Miami/ opened yesterday. Guests, including collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics, at the vernissage finally caught a glimpse at what has been concealed inside the oversized air-conditioned tent in the parking lot across from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Beneath the white plastic dwelling lies 37 presenters that range from Paris to L.A. showing contemporary and modern designs. Think museum-quality exhibitions of pieces ranging from 20th and 21st century furniture, lighting and object d’art, including designer collaborations.
It is the biggest Design Miami/ to date and marks the ninth year for the fair, its third in Miami Beach. It will remain open until Sunday. This year, in addition to world-renowned designers, Design Miami/ will feature emerging talent alongside these powerhouses. It’s the ultimate platform for any designer. Design Talks, panel discussions and lectures between the world’s top designers and architects will also commence at this year’s Design Miami. Guests can expect to hear Martha Stewart, along with W Magazine Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi and architect Richard Meier to give the keynote at the Design Talks conversation.
The fair also offers satellite locations for its presenters, such as this year’s Louis Vuitton’s “La mason au bord de l’eau” (house by the shore) installation at The Raleigh, which encompasses the 1934 design of Charlotte Perriand.
It’s not the only house to appear at this year’s event. A 1944 pre-fabricated, full-scale house created by Jean Nouvel and exhibited by Galerie Patrick Sequin appears publicly for the first time at Design Miami. The installation includes a 650-square-foot home inspired by housing for WWII refugees.
Other brands participating in this year’s Design Miami include Fendi, now in its sixth year at the fair, who partnered with French designer Maria Pergay, as well as Berluti’s four, Maarten Baas-designed pieces and Swarovski, who joined forces with Brazilian designer and architect Guilherme Torres for its “Crystal Palace” installation.
It seems Miami’s own design style also makes a mark at this year’s Design Miami. At the entrance of the fair, which is crafted from sand, outdoor beach-esque furniture welcomes visitors. The work comes from Formlessfinder and is known as Tent Pile.
While chairs, couches, cabinetry and lighting are at the heart of the event, inside there are other elements of the luxe life. Guest sipping champagne will encounter two Audis on display, as well as a cafe from local chef Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink.
With so many exceptional elements, Design Miami is the key to creating the ultimate dream house.
