Carly Rae Jepsen

Miami Beach, FL – May 10, 2013 – Mother’s Day weekend kicked off with the perfect mother-daughter event on Friday night: a live performance by Carly Rae Jepsen at the Fontainebleau. The Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum pop sensation was featured as a part of the iconic hotel’s BleauLive performance series. Jepsen joins the ranks of other major musicians who have performed in the series like JewelRicky Martin, and Pitbull. Teenage girls and their mothers filled the Fontainebleau’s lobby Friday evening as they were bubbling with excitement at the prospect of seeing Jepsen in the Sparkle ballroom’s intimate setting. Drinks at the BleauLive private lounge were served just outside the ballroom entrance with cocktails inspired by Jepsen’s songs. Before Jepsen got on stage, World Red Eye caught up with her as she told us a little about her rise on the charts, how much she’s enjoyed Miami on this trip, and her new remix with Nicki Minaj.

World Red Eye: How did ‘Call Me Maybe’ get the attention of Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun? How did it all get started?

Carly Rae Jepsen: I originally got signed to them when they heard ‘Call Me Maybe.’ I was already doing a bit of a radio career in Canada, nothing global, so it was really exciting for me when I got the initial tweet and phone calls that they were interested in helping me spread it worldwide. I went down to LA, met everybody, signed with Interscope, and we were off to the races.

WRE: Is this your first time in Miami? How do you like it?

CRJ: I’ve been here before for a hot minute, but this is my first time here playing, so it’s exciting. We had some great sushi last night [at Blade], went for a beach stroll, rented bikes, slept in, and just watched movies. It’s been nice and chill.

WRE: How do you like the Fontainebleau and what do you think about performing at this Miami Beach landmark?

CRJ: It’s pretty crazy. You think about all the people who have been here before, and it gives you that extra chill like, ‘Wow, tonight’s an important night.’ There’s a bit of history involved, and I want to add my own little mark to it and make everyone proud. So, we’ll see what happens.

WRE: Your recent collaboration with Nicki Minaj for the remix of ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You’ just came out this week. How did you guys come together?

CRJ: It was so much fun. I was making a dream list of who I’d want to do a remix with because I knew I needed an extra little something, and Scoots [Scooter Braun] suggested Nicki. I thought, ‘There’s no way,’ but we put it out there to her just to see if she’d be interested. She wrote back right away saying, ‘Yeah I’d love to,’ and literally had a verse sent back to us in no time.
