Q&A: Cedric Gervais
Cedric Gervais at The Sh!t Show at LIV, June 2, 2012
Miami Beach, FL – March 14, 2013 – Cedric Gervais is a name that’s now on the tip of everyone’s tongues in the world of Electronic Dance Music. Turn the dial back ten years ago, and that wasn’t so much the case. Cedric started out DJing in France as a teenager, and it wasn’t until he came over to the United States- Miami specifically- that things started to take off for him. The timing couldn’t have been better for the two- as Miami’s music scene was starting to boom and the clubs were looking for fresh talent. Cedric got his start playing at the then-hotspots on South Beach like Living Room and Crobar, and grew into his own just as the city did. He broke through when “Spirit of my Life” got some heavy recognition in 2006, notably by Pete Tong. Since then, Cedric started maintaining residencies at some of the biggest and best clubs in Miami (LIV) and Vegas (Marquee), which are both now home to his signature Sh!t Show parties. They’ve grown into their own crazy extravaganzas that you can really only understand by attending, as it’s just an anything goes kind of party. Last year was his biggest shining moment yet, as his hit “Molly” sky-rocketed into an instant sensation with the EDM scene of 2012, gaining even the Pop Queen herself- Madonna– as a fan. As he’s been reaching new heights in his career as an internationally-known DJ, spinning with the likes of DJ Vice, Dirty South, and working with all kinds of famous names in the music industry, Cedric still maintains a home base in the city he started it all in- Miami.
Cedric has seen Miami’s music scene grow and change all for the better of the years, especially what are now the two biggest times of the season: Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival. As these two are bigger than ever this year, it only seemed right to catch up with Cedric, who has also blown up in the last year, and get him to weigh in on it all. World Red Eye has been with Cedric since the early days, and couldn’t be happier to continue to be there documenting his progress along the way. Here, we’ve got some photos from his gigs from over the years, including the wild Sh!t Shows at LIV. Speaking of, one is actually going down tonight at STORY for the first time ever, and it’s sure to leave a lasting memory. Check out our interview with Cedric about WMC, his career, and what he’s got in the works right now.

World Red Eye: Your infamous Sh!t Show is always crazy with a theme for everyone to dress up and get wild… You’re hosting one tonight night at STORY for the first time since it’s usually at LIV here in Miami. Any new tricks up your sleeve for this time?
Cedric Gervais: You can expect a full on shit show. You never really know what to expect for this… You should see the creative meeting we have for these things. It’s me, Jimmy Greenup, and [David] Grutman, and we just come up with the craziest ideas… It’s anything from a midget on a jetskit at the entrance in a pool to- who knows. It’s one of the craziest parties in Miami, for sure.

WRE: Last year was huge for you and your hit track “Molly”, especially when Madonna referred to it on stage in her surprise appearance at Ultra with Avicii. What’s your relationship with Madonna? Clearly she’s a fan…
CG: Yes I definitely know her, I’ve worked with her in the studio multiple times. She had heard the track- I played it for her and everything. When she did that at Ultra, I wasn’t there, and my friends called me. I thought they were joking with me, but they weren’t. It’s a great feeling to have a person supporting you like that.

WRE: What was it like when you heard “Molly” on the radio for the first time?
CG: It was very special. When you do something like that and you hear your record on the radio… I heard it in the UK for the first time in a restaurant. It came on a daytime radio station, and I was just the most happiest guy on the planet.

WRE: You started out playing residencies at Miami clubs like Living Room, Crobar, Space, and Nikki Beach years ago, and now have residencies at major clubs in Miami like LIV and around the country and globe. How did you manage to accomplish such a tremendous growth?
CG: Part of my growth was that I was in Miami at the right time. There was this explosion of EDM and house music. Miami was one of the first cities in America supporting that, and a big part of it was that I started making records and producing it.

WRE: How have you seen Miami change over the years to be where it is today in the music scene with WMC and Ultra?
CG: I’ve seen it change so much. When [Winter] Music Conference started, it was a little amount of people coming to town for meetings, small parties, small club events. And now it’s every major party and club, and thousands of people coming from all over the world. It used to be just people making business between labels and the industry, but it’s grown massively from how it started to where it is now.

WRE: Just as your music has increased in popularity over the years, so has house music and EDM in general. What’s it been like to be a part of this massive movement?
CG: It’s been amazing. I’m very proud because to me, I kind of represent Miami when I DJ anywhere else around the world. I grew up at the same time Miami grew up, so to me it’s a very special place to be and I’m glad to be a part of this.

WRE: What are you most looking forward to this year for Ultra and WMC? Any parties, gigs, DJs?
CG: To be honest, I’m looking forward to listening to a lot of different people. It’s a time when I get to hear what everyone’s doing, a lot of different music. I’m looking forward to my gigs, but also to support other people’s gigs and listen to new music.

WRE: What can we look forward to from Cedric Gervais in the near future? Are you working on any other big hits like “Molly”?
CG: Yes, I have a big single. It’s going to be a pretty big hit. I did this song with Howard Jones- “Things Can Only Get Better”- he’s a singer from the 80s. I just redid it with him. You’re going to see a lot of promotion during WMC. We’re actually debuting the song for conference, and we just shot the video.
