Faena Rose Hosts Artist Mickalene Thomas for Exclusive Conversation During Miami Art Week at Faena
Miami Beach, FL – December 3, 2018 – Faena Rose kicked off Miami Art Week with an exclusive conversation with award-winning artist, Mickalene Thomas, moderated by curator & writer, Dr. Maura Reilly. Celebrated for her texturally rich paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations, Mickalene discussed how she draws on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. With influences ranging from early modernist masters, such as Picasso, Matisse, and Bearden, to the civil rights movement and second wave of feminism, Mickalene constructs complex imagery that effectively challenges common representations of women. Her work can be found in exhibitions around the world as well as the permanent collections of MoMA, The Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and National Portrait Gallery, among many others.
The conversation was hosted in collaboration with The Feminist Institute, which will be the foremost digital repository of feminist work from multiple disciplines for research and education. Faena Rose is an exclusive, art and culture-based private members club at the Faena District Miami Beach, which brings together its dynamic community of likeminded individuals through a robust, year-round calendar of the most engaging and transformative cultural experiences.
