Miami Beach, FL – October 12, 2018 – World Red Eye is inviting you to #JOINTHEHUSTLE as we partner with Barry’s Bootcamp – the strength and cardio interval fitness experience that provides an immersive, high-intensity, one-hour workout that’s as effective as it is fun. To kick off the partnership, WRE partnered with Purple. When he’s not opening the velvet ropes to LIV and STORY, Purple is pumping it up at Barry’s Bootcamp. The Costa Rican native is known as the Talent and VIP Liaison at Miami’s hottest nightlife destinations LIV, STORY, and Komodo. It wasn’t until 1994, when he moved to South Miami with his family – that he earned the name “Purple” after playing a pickup game of football with his neighborhood friends in of course, a Purple shirt. His determination to help his family financially, is what sparked his interest in his first sports bar promotion. After earning his first $400 dollars letting people through the door, he knew was on to something. The high school drop out, got his start in the nightlife industry working at small bars throughout Miami, but he knew there was more. Purple sought after the big leagues in Miami Beach.
Purple worked at almost every club on South Beach since then: Mansion, Opium (now STORY), Crobar (later Cameo), Dream, Dolce, Mokai, Mynt, Aero Bar, and many others. Finally, the call of “Midas” came, (as he fondly refers to it) the call from David Grutman. Grutman contacted him to schedule lunch at the Fontainebleau Hotel, a place where Purple had never even stepped foot in after living in Miami for so many years. After schedule conflicts, Purple was able to meet with Joe Lopez instead. Lopez, placed a hard hat on his “Purple” head and said, “what I am about to show you, you can’t tell anyone.” Lopez, walked him through a construction site of what was soon to become one of the best nightclubs in the world… “LIV.” Purple was in awe of the space and wanted to know everything about it. From that point Purple, dropped all other work obligations and started his journey at LIV becoming one of their first employees as a nightlife host. Today, he manages the talent and VIP division of both LIV, STORY, and Komodo and is easily recognized with his ever changing colored hair. Although he is always seen in the club hanging out and working with the biggest celebrities, Purple always finds time to prioritize his health and #JOINTHEHUSTLE with Barry’s Bootcamp. World Red Eye met up with Purple at Barry’s Bootcamp Miami Beach studio to catch him in his second element working on his fitness. Read the full Q&A below.
WRE: What is your favorite part about working in the nightlife industry?
PURPLE: My favorite part about working in the nightlife industry is getting to know so many people and connecting with different cultures, races, and learning from everyone I meet. It allows me to continue to build my my network. You never know who you’re going to meet. Every day is exciting to me.
WRE: How do you maintain such good shape when you work 24-7 hours in the nightlife industry?
P: I love my health more than I love my job and I make it a priority to get my workouts throughout the day everyday. It’s all discipline and years of focus. I’ve been sober my whole life so it’s always been super easy for me to get up early, I’m my own alarm clock. I average 4-5 hours of sleep and have insane amount of energy for the rest of the day. Being in the industry for more than a decade now, my body and mind are used to this lifestyle so now I’m pretty much in auto-pilot.
WRE: What are your favorite go spots in Miami?
P: Any of our restaurants of course. OTL for the breakfast, the avocado toast and soy milk latte is a must. My favorite is PLANTA, there’s a wide variety of plant based dishes and Komodo is for anyone who wants that cool hip Miami vibe.

WRE: First off, where does the name Purple come from? What is your real name?
P: When I first moved here from Costa Rica, right after Andrew, I came straight to Miami. My parents took a place here in south Miami and I joined an elementary in the middle of the school year. A lot of the kids didn’t know my name and when I used to go outside and play with them. I wore a Purple shirt that I used to wear every other day. So that’s how the name got stuck with me. Middle school, high school, and college, everyone was calling me Purple (teachers, counselors, vice principals and principals). Now my real name ____________! I just can’t say it to the public, its always a mystery. It’s just more fun being known as Purple than _________!
WRE: What’s your favorite day of the week at Barry’s (EX- Monday/Arms & Abs, Tuesday/Butt & Legs, etc)?
P: Wednesdays was one of the main reasons I joined Barry’s Bootcamp because it’s the middle of the week. The main focus on Wednesdays is chest, back, abs, and treadmill work. It’s the ultimate workout!

WRE: You always change up the color of your hair, how do you decide which color to change it to?
P: My hair color all depends on my mood, like when I went pink it was around December for Art Basel to look “Artsy”. In the past, I’ve done blue, purple, and silver out of randomness, but my hair is always blonde if I don’t have a color.
WRE: What’s your go-to shake at the Fuel Bar?
P: The PB&J has always been my favorite. The baristas don’t even ask me for my order, they already know I’m gonna get the PB&J at the end of the class.
WRE: Do you have a favorite instructor?
P: Yes Derek. Derek was the first one to get me hooked on Barry’s Bootcamp because of his charismatic and fun personality. In the beginning, I noticed how much he cared about everyone doing the right form and every time he calls out your name, it just makes you want to push harder. And of course, the variety of music is amazing. It can be Biggie one song and then The Veronicas the next song haha.
WRE: What’s your fastest run speed?
P: The treadmills in the Miami Beach location, had the max speed of 12.5MPH, but as the other advanced runners and I got stronger and faster, some of them were set to 15MPH. When the Aventura location first opened, the new treadmills weren’t set at the base speed (12.5-15MPH) they were at 20MPH so I definitely tried that speed and did it a few times on my sprint. So I would say the fastest I’ve ever ran was 20MPH.
WRE: What is your favorite song or style of music that really gets you in the zone when it comes on?
P: Gui’s noon class definitely has the best music. At least for me because I’m Latin so he plays Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam, and J Balvin hits. I can be running full speed and singing Bad Bunny lyrics without a care in the world because I’m so in the zone.
WRE: You have a strong following on social media, how do you use that to your advantage?
P: I’m pretty good at social media so I was blessed enough to build a strong following by doing the right things on my social platforms like staying active and engaging with the right influencers. I use my social platforms to my advantage by voicing my opinion on different topics of my lifestyle: work, lifestyle, health, fashion, and personal life.
WRE: Your Instagram bio says you’re vegan? How is that lifestyle going?
P: I’m happy to say that I’ve reached the first year of having a vegan/plant based diet in this past July. Being plant based has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My energy, body, and mind definitely feel better than ever. This diet absolutely fits my lifestyle, I love it. Go green!
