Miami Beach, FL – May 15, 2015 – The Pritzker Architecture Prize, with Pritzker Laureates as well as Craig Robins, unveiled a tent structure outside of the New World Center conceived by this year’s laureate, German architect Frei Otto, in honor of his passing earlier this year. Frei Otto designed the tent as a music pavilion for the 1955 Federal Garden Exhibition in Kassel, Germany. It is a simple and lyrical example of the vision of an architect who had a fundamental influence on 20th Century architecture and whose designs balance both great intellect and beauty. Otto’s pioneering message of technology for the sake of society, embodied in the tent’s design, materials and simple elegance, seem incredibly prescient. He created a new paradigm of sustainable architecture, initiating a world-wide industry of energy-saving fabric structures. 2014 Pritzker Laureate Shigeru Ban, a close friend and longtime collaborator of Otto, has implemented Otto’s design with the support of Birdair (TAIYO), the leading contractor of custom tensile structures in the world. Ban notes, “Frei Otto achievements, rather than just being his ‘works,’ have become the ‘grammar’ of structural design and we architects are only now realizing that we unconsciously base our designs on his grammar. The Pritzker Prize will make the world recognize his achievement.”
