The Cleveland Orchestra

Miami, FL – February 28, 2015 – Following the success of its Miami concerts in November 2014, The Cleveland Orchestra returned with an even powerful sound with the help of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, who conducted two weekends of subscription concerts. The Cleveland Orchestra explores the music of two of western music’s most profound and controversial composers in Fate and Freedom: Music of Beethoven and Shostakovich. Speaking about the Fate and Freedom weekend, Music Director Franz Welser-Möst said, “Beethoven mused on the ideals of his time and put those truths forward in an unmistakable way in his music. Under Stalin, Shostakovich would never have survived acting as openly as Beethoven. He had to subtly undermine what he was told to do, in order to express his yearnings for personal and political peace and freedom. Despite their differences — and perhaps as much because of their similarities — Beethoven and Shostakovich both wrote music that lives beyond the circumstances in which they were created. Both composers deliver timeless messages about freedom and human dignity.”
