Miami Beach, FL – January 9, 2025 – Ocean Drive is at the center of a heated legal battle over traffic and public space: A judge has officially ordered the city to restore two-way vehicle traffic to the street by Jan. 15, ending the pedestrian plaza near 13th Street and potentially removing a bike lane.

The decision comes after a lawsuit by the Clevelander South Beach, local prominent hotel and nightlife venue, argued that the current configuration, introduced during the pandemic, harmed its business and posed safety risks. While pedestrian and bicycle advocates praised the setup as a model of urban design, the court ruled that Miami Beach lacked proper permits from Miami-Dade County to implement the changes.

The ruling highlights tensions between creating pedestrian-friendly spaces and maintaining access for businesses and vehicles. Miami Beach officials now face pressure to comply with the court order while working with county officials to explore a future plan that balances public and business interests along the iconic South Beach strip.
