MAM’s Wynwood Deco Bike Tour
Miami, FL – February 9, 2013 – Last weekend, Miamians got a unique tour of Wynwood via Deco Bike. The Miami Art Museum put on the Saturday afternoon ride, hosted by Primary Flight artist Typoe, who gave the tour and talked about the various murals and graffiti art around the artsy neighborhood. Typoe told WRE about the tour: “It was fun and cool because a lot of people there just went to learn and had no clue about any of it, so they learned a lot and gained an understanding of what’s happening in that neighborhood. There were about a hundred people on bikes I think. It was sold out; it was pretty wild.” Take a look at our photo tour with some commentary by Typoe on the art.

“This was done by Roa- a Belgian artist who painted this with us two years ago during Basel. It’s a manatee cut in half… He’s a dark kind of artist who does crazy animals and carcasses.”

“They just commissioned someone to do that- it’s by a design firm that just finished it. It’s brand new.”
“This is by Kenton Parker- an LA artist who we represent at Primary Projects. That’s his more psychedelic-induced look with the ‘starburst’ design.”
“This one is at Bakehouse Art Complex. It’s two silos done by a New York artist named Depoe. We did these like four years ago; he does a lot with colors, lines, texture, and shapes to engage the audience so we like doing a lot of that outside because it draws people in and changes the landscape. It used to be a lot brighter, but it’s nice because we love how it’s starting to look now, kind of a part of the silo itself.”
“This is my wall from the Margulies collection, which is one of the biggest collections in the world of art, and that’s possibly the most important wall we have. Eight or nine years ago there were only a few murals in the neighborhood, and we were fighting the city about having murals. Store owners wanted to fine you to take it off, and once I painted that and the city told Marty [Margulies] he have to take it off, he got a bunch of lawyers to take it to court and the city never showed up. Ever since then we’ve had free reign over Wynwood and started all the murals. It’s cool we get a chance to let people know the history, how it started and was almost destroyed because this amazing art collector got behind us and liked what we were doing and everything changed from there. TCP stands for The Cat’s Pajamas- it’s a crew I started about a decade ago. We’re in different countries- Canada, Australia, New York- and we just paint together.”
“That’s also in the Margulies collection- El Mac did the painting and Retna did the background design. That guy is actually a homeless guy who El [Mac] had a picture of when they were painting somewhere in LA and his glasses were taped together. It’s funny because it looks like this holy picture, and it’s really just this gnarly homeless dude going bananas.”
“Retna was one of the first artists we brought down here. He has about six murals, and this was the last wall he did. It was like the tribute wall to Miami. This is also the biggest mural in Wynwood, and it just says all of our names from everyone he’s worked with here. Over a decade of time he’s created his own text from a lot of inspirations- gang graffiti, tattoos, and other graphics.”
“These guys were just hand painted with spray paint below our TCP mural. It’s just a lot of crazy toys and construction and f**** shit up.”
