Museum of Graffiti presents the Grand Opening of the First US Solo Exhibition of Artists MOSES & TAPS™ Entitled Plastic is Forever

Miami, FL – September 7, 2024 – MOSES & TAPS™ are pioneers in a movement that defies easy categorization, blending elements of urban art, graffiti, and conceptual performance. Since their independent beginnings in 1994 and their collaboration starting in 2007, MOSES & TAPS™ have continually pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Their work is a powerful commentary on the transient nature of graffiti, recontextualizing it within the permanence of traditional art spaces like the Museum of Graffiti.

They stand out as some of the few graffiti artists that have maintained their anonymity despite their significant influence and commercial success. In their latest series, Plastic is Forever™, the artists delve into the abstract, blending geometric forms and vibrant color schemes. Their work often features PVC materials like those used on German cargo trains, a nod to their dedication for painting trains around the world.

At first glance, the series appears to adhere to the traditional graffiti style, with dynamic outlines, shadows, and forms that suggest the unique visual code of graffiti. However, MOSES & TAPS™ subvert these expectations by creating “letters” that are deliberately deceptive. The forms are not actual letters, but rather abstract shapes that mimic the look of graffiti without conveying any specific meaning. This deliberate ambiguity forces the viewer to grapple with the instinct to find meaning in the meaningless, ultimately seeing what they want to see.

Plastic is Forever™ is an examination of the graffiti system itself and its place within broader societal structures. MOSES & TAPS™ challenge the rigid codes of the graffiti subculture, turning the act of writing into a conceptual art form. By blurring the lines between vandalism and art, they invite viewers to reconsider the role of graffiti in both the urban landscape and the art world.

The grand opening celebration was made incredibly special thanks to the Museum’s long term partnership with Modelo, along with the gracious support of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany and Miami’s Oktoberfest, the longest continuously-running Oktoberfest in the United States which will be held this year on October 11-13 and October 18-20 at German American Social Club on Miller Drive in Miami’s horse country.
