Miami, FL – April 29, 2024 – Miami-Dade County is eyeing a $500 million partnership with Brightline to develop the Northeast Corridor, a new commuter rail system with six stations. Jose Gonzalez, EVP of Florida East Coast Industries, hinted at upcoming discussions with county commissioners to greenlight this venture. The investment would upgrade rail infrastructure, with funding from federal, state, and local sources. Pending Miami-Dade’s approval, the South Florida Regional Transportation Agency would operate this expansion, supplementing trirail’s existing services. Negotiations are underway regarding Brightline’s financial share, as the overall project cost is set at $500 million. Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins indicated progress in talks, buoyed by President Biden’s proposed $263.7 million grant, pending congressional backing. The expansion’s six new stations, including key areas like Downtown Miami and Wynwood, signal a broader vision for rail connectivity in South Florida.
