WRE News: House Passes Bill That Could Ban TikTok in the U.S.

Miami, FL – March 13, 2024 – The House has approved a bill aiming to ban TikTok in the U.S. unless the platform severs ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. With 170 million American users, the move poses a significant threat to one of the world’s most popular social media platforms. While the fate of the measure in the Senate remains uncertain, President Biden has signaled his support for it, promising to sign if it clears the Senate. Should the bill become law, TikTok would have around five months to disassociate from ByteDance, or risk being removed from US app stores. TikTok vehemently opposes the legislation, arguing that it infringes on users’ First Amendment rights and has urged its users to rally against it. In response, China’s foreign ministry has condemned the bill as an act of bullying, escalating tensions surrounding the fate of the app in the US.
