Miami, FL – December 7, 2023 – From the founders of the Museum of Graffiti, The Art of Hip Hop opened its permanent space showcasing the history of Hip Hop. The Art of Hip Hop partnered with StockX to celebrate the debut of this new space during Art Basel Miami Beach 2023 with a long list of industry insiders, artists, and performances courtesy of D’Usse. The inaugural exhibition, entitled From the Bronx to the Beach, showcases rare vintage ephemera from Hip Hop’s first NYC DJ, Kool Herc, to Miami’s own pioneer Uncle Luke. In addition to these items, the exhibition will feature a special focus on the unsung heroes of Hip Hop culture: the visual creators who have left an indelible mark on this movement. While rappers and DJs routinely absorb the limelight, The Art of Hip Hop places an emphasis on the photographers, album cover artists, graffiti writers, and logo designers who are responsible for creating the visual identity of Hip Hop as we know it. Visitors can expect to see the works of famed Hip Hop photographers Janette Beckman, Mike Miller, Henry Chalfant, Matt Doyle, Lisa Leone, Joe Conzo, Erin Patrice O’Brien, and Daniel Hastings, alongside Hip Hop album covers designed by Cey Adams, Eric Haze, Slick, Kaws, and more. The exhibition will also shine a special spotlight on Miami’s own Hip Hop history, capturing it through the lenses of local historian and photographer Derick G and photographer Esdras T. Thelusma. Additionally, the Art of Hip Hop collaborated with StockX to curate a collection of sneakers that further amplify the stories of the works featured in the exhibition.
