Miami, FL – August 15, 2023 – Lolita, the renowned captive killer whale, once a star attraction at Miami’s Seaquarium, is on the cusp of a groundbreaking transition. Following years of public outcry and regulatory scrutiny, the Seaquarium has agreed to relinquish its federal permit for marine mammal entertainment, paving the way for Lolita’s potential release into natural waters. The dilapidated stadium that once held her performances now houses the sling that may carry her to a new life. A team of experts, led by non-profit organization Friends of Toki, is working to acclimate the 57-year-old orca to the wild after over five decades in captivity. Some advocates argue for immediate improvements to her current living conditions, deeming the move a distraction from addressing her present suffering. A group called Truth4Toki champions the idea of establishing more humane artificial quarters. However, the Friends of Toki team insists that Lolita can adapt to life in an enclosed sanctuary in Washington State, where she would have 24-hour care and interaction with trainers. Various obstacles complicate the relocation plan, including ensuring Lolita’s compatibility with her native Southern resident orca population, as well as addressing her existing health concerns. Yet, supporters remain hopeful, driven by the prospect of providing Lolita with a life closer to the one she once knew in the Pacific Ocean.
