Miami, FL – August 13, 2023 – Miami’s ambitious I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project, featuring a striking “signature bridge” and a double-decked roadway, is facing further setbacks, with completion now expected in late 2027 and costs surpassing the initial estimate by $38 million.
The focal point of the project is the iconic “signature bridge,” which will feature six sweeping arches spanning 1,025 feet over I-395. The bridge’s unique design has drawn comparisons to a “high-tech tarantula.” Alongside this eye-catching feature, the initiative includes a “complete reconstruct” of the highway to enhance capacity, costing $587 million.
Another aspect involves constructing an upper deck of traffic over the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836), known as the Viaduct, which will facilitate smoother transfers to and from Interstate 95, funded by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority.
The overall cost of the project has risen to $840 million from its original estimate of $802 million. The project’s conclusion is slated to bring a 33-acre urban park beneath I-395, although funding remains uncertain.
