Miami, FL – July 31, 2023 – For 98 years, the Freedom Tower has stood tall as an enduring symbol of Miami, uniting the community amid constant transformations. Now, after serving as a beacon of hope and liberty, the iconic landmark is closing temporarily for a much-needed $25 million renovation undertaken by Miami Dade College
The comprehensive two-year rehabilitation project aims to preserve the tower’s heavily ornamented Mediterranean appearance, both inside and out, while addressing maintenance issues, such as structural repairs, an exterior makeover, and refurbishment of electrical and mechanical systems, including the replacement of elevators and lighting.
The restoration project, funded by the state of Florida and overseen by architectural firm MCHarry Associates in collaboration with preservation architect Richard Heisenbottle, will ensure that the tower emerges rejuvenated and ready to serve as a centerpiece of downtown Miami for its second century.
Upon reopening in 2025, the Freedom Tower will celebrate its centennial in a series of events that showcase its role in Miami’s history. The building will continue to house the college’s Museum of Art and Design and other cultural programs, with plans to expand exhibits, especially those recounting the Cuban exile experience and the tower’s early connection to Miami’s growth.
