WRE News: Miami Beach Commission Reverses Decision on No-Bid Deal for Nikki Beach Club

Miami, FL – May 25, 2023 – Miami Beach elected officials have reversed their decision to negotiate a no-bid deal for Nikki Beach Club, an oceanfront property owned by the city. Instead, they will pursue a competitive bidding process for the lease when the current operator’s contract expires in 2026. The resolution, sponsored by Commissioner David Richardson, requires the city to issue a request for proposals by June 15, with interested bidders having until August 15 to submit their proposals.

The current operator, managed by Jack and Lucia Penrod, filed a lawsuit against the city and the potential new concessionaire, Boucher Brothers, alleging violations of Miami Beach’s competitive bidding laws and illegal lobbying. The move to exclusively negotiate with Boucher Brothers had caused outrage among residents, particularly in the South of Fifth neighborhood where Nikki Beach Club is located. The area has seen significant development, including the presence of luxury restaurant groups and the expected attention of celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay.

The reversal of the no-bid deal and the shift towards a competitive bidding process reflect the response to public backlash and a desire to ensure fairness and transparency in the leasing process for the coveted oceanfront property.
