WRE News: A Brief History of 4/20: The Celebration of a Counterculture

Miami, FL – April 20, 2023 – It’s high time for a history lesson… 4/20 began in 1971 with five high school students (dubbed ‘the Waldos’) in San Rafael, California, who used the code “4:20” on their search for an abandoned cannabis crop.

While the Waldos were never successful in their search, 4:20 quickly became known as a socially acceptable time to consume cannabis, then becoming recognized slang and, today, an international counterculture holiday. Half celebration, half call to action, April 20th is known as an observed day of celebrating the consumption of cannabis, and a day to advocate for cannabis liberalization and legalization.
