Miami, FL – March 8, 2023 – A route that has been targeted for a train since the 1980’s, dubbed the “Baylink” connecting mainland Miami to Miami Beach, is back on track— this time as a Metromover extension. The $1 billion Baylink plan to connect downtown Miami to Miami Beach has replaced the original $1.3 billion monorail proposal. The new plan would extend the Metromover to the Beach, traveling above the MacArthur causeway and linking the Government Center to south Miami Beach. Construction is set to run from 2025 to 2029.

Advocates in favor of the train see it as an amenity and necessity, arguing it would provide better access to mainland activities for Miami Beach residents, and alleviate overcrowded bus routes. Opponents cite crime increase, an influx of homeless, and graffiti as reasons for opposition.
