Miami, FL – April 13, 2020 – #WRECares has partnered with designer Melanie Grendovich of Uncovered Swimwear to fight COIVD-19 by creating and donating handmade face masks to hospitals and those working on the front lines.

Vancouver, Canada native Melanie Grendovich, grew up being very active and always worked hard for the goals she. Grendovich has a strong passion about making her own clothes and looking and feeling different than anybody else, she always loved to sew but it was something she would push to the side and leave it as a hobby. One day, she decided she was tired of working for companies that didn’t appreciate her hard work ethic, as a result, she combined her passion of creating and launched her business Uncovered Swim, a handmade swimwear company.

Melanie has joined forces with #WRECares to help give back to the Miami community by making face masks using her swimwear materials. She came across World Red Eye on Instagram after someone reposted our story about a group of people sewing and donating face masks. Uncovered goal is to make face masks to donate to those working on the front lines.

WRE: How did you get connected with #WRECares?

Melanie Grendovich: I saw a post on @worldredeye Instagram and reached out via email to learn how I can help.

WRE: How is your company helping to fight COVID-19?

MG: Uncovered Swim is sewing masks to donate to those in need, Uncovered is a handmade Swimwear brand and we have access to fabric and materials since we sew each bikini, we decided to use the skills of sewing and started to make masks. We have been making our masks out of cotton with a polypropylene filter and we are very happy that we can get those supplies to be able to give back.

WRE: Why did you want to get involved?

MG: We started making masks because this is a difficult time for everyone and some people might not have the recourses to protect themselves so we wanted to help out any ways we can. As we reached out to see who was I need we realized it was everyone and we needed to use our skills to make and send masks to different areas of the world.

WRE: How were you able to involve your industry in the making of masks?

MG: For Uncovered it was easy to start making masks along with our bikinis since we have all the supplies and skills to do so. We started with 100 masks to donate, and with the power of social media we were able to get a few donations to help us continue getting materials for the masks and sending them out. This has been a huge help for us to be able to continue making these masks.

WRE: What resources do you need to help increase your production of masks?

MG: The resources we need are the fabric or funds for the fabric to make the masks, currently we are ordering fabric from our supplier and donating from our own stock of other materials needed like thread and elastic. Thankfully with the help of donations we will be able to order again and produce more masks.
