Miami Beach, FL – December 16, 2024 – Miami Beach is considering replacing a public parking lot with padel courts, aiming to balance recreation and revenue.
City commissioners have voted to seek proposals from padel operators to lease the P27 parking lot near Lincoln Road. The 151-space lot, located at 17th Street and Meridian Avenue, is a prime spot for shoppers visiting nearby attractions and retail.
Commissioner Joey Magazine, who championed the idea, believes the area’s existing parking options can absorb the loss, with additional spaces offered by a nearby office building owner. Magazine also argues the courts would boost local business and serve as a recreational benefit to the community.
However, there are concerns about equity, as padel often requires paid memberships, making access less inclusive. While Magazine suggests including public access in any lease, another key factor is financial: the lot currently generates over $700,000 annually, so the city will closely evaluate the revenue potential from a padel operator.
With the sport’s growing popularity among Miami’s celebrity crowd, city leaders are watching to see if this plan can strike the right balance between community appeal and economic sense.
