Miami, FL – November 14, 2024 – Nicole Nomsa Moyo’s “Pearl Jam” is set to transform the Miami Design District during Miami Art Week 2024, celebrating the power of artistic expression rooted in Ndebele traditions.
In its 10th year, the Miami Design District’s Annual Design Commission, in collaboration with Design Miami, has chosen Moyo’s vibrant installation, which draws inspiration from the rich patterns and colors of the Southern African Ndebele tribe. “Pearl Jam” consists of four jewelry-themed interactive sculptures, from giant pearls to intricate, handcrafted earrings, highlighting the intersection of tradition and modern design. Crafted with sustainable materials, the installation not only honors African cultural heritage but also fosters a global dialogue on creativity and identity. Central to “Pearl Jam” is the artistry of Ndebele women, who will handcraft over 1,000 unique ‘earrings’ for the display, weaving ancestral techniques into contemporary art. This project connects diverse communities, bridging cultural legacies with modern innovation. As Miami Design District’s landscape is transformed with these radiant installations, it brings a unique vibrancy to the neighborhood during one of its most dynamic seasons, extending into the new year.
