Miami, FL – November 6, 2024 – Florida voters have decided against legalizing recreational marijuana, rejecting Amendment 3 in Tuesday’s election.

The proposed amendment, requiring 60% approval to pass, would have made Florida the first Deep South state to allow recreational marijuana use. Although former President Trump expressed support, Governor Ron DeSantis and major backers like billionaire Ken Griffin opposed it, citing risks to youth and public health. Legalization was projected to be highly lucrative, with potential tax revenue of $196 million and significant gains for existing medical marijuana dispensaries.

Despite the setback for recreational use, medical marijuana remains legal in Florida, with over 880,000 registered users. Additionally, hemp-based products, which offer similar effects, continue to be available under state law.
