Miami, FL – Sept 7, 2024 – On Saturday night Locust Projects kicked off Miami’s season of the arts with two immersive installations featuring artist duos. Hundreds, including artists, collectors, arts patrons, and Board Members, gathered to celebrate in Locust’s expansive Little River warehouse. In the Main Gallery Daniel Arturo Almeida and Adrián Edgard Rivera’s The Elephant Never Forgets struck a nostalgic chord for many who recall the 1970s sitcom El Chavo del Ocho. Drawing from ‘la vecindad’—the show’s iconic neighborhood setting—and other cultural references from Mexican and Venezuelan media, the artists’ surreal backstage TV studio set filled with hundreds of digital bootleg marionettes explores nostalgia, identity, and the influence of mass media.
In the Project Room Miami-based new media collaborative duo LIZN’BOW opened Niñalandia Skycoaster inviting visitors to step into their personal Buick Rendezvous to take a VR rollercoaster ride through their Niñalandia Mixed Reality Multiverse. Their queer-futurist, post-apocalyptic vision of Miami features lavender dolphins, a jet-skiing unicorn cow, floating mountains of burning money and giant leche jugs, against a skyline of neon rainbows and undulating pink and purple skies. LIZN’BOW brought their technicolor world to life with a live performance by Niña, their feminist reggaeton band, featuring cameos by Miami artist misael soto and Miami bass musician Otto Von Schirach.
The exhibitions are on view through November 2. Visit locustprojects.org for information on related programs including a VR workshop, artist talks and a Flea Market featuring Miami makers. Both shows are Knight Digital Commissions with additional support for The Elephant Never Forgets from Funding Arts Network.
