Miami, FL – December 5, 2023 – Locust Projects celebrated Miami Art Week with the U.S. premiere of “Waterbirds: Migratory Sound Flow”, a 2,500 square foot suspended sound sculpture by Mexico City-based artist Tania Candiani and “Poetics of Place” a commissioned interactive installation in the Project Room by Miami-based artist Cornelius Tulloch. True to the organization’s 25-year artist-centered experimental nature, the shows push the boundaries of traditional art spaces. Originally commissioned for the 23rd Sydney Biennial, Candiani’s “hanging river” populated with small ocarinas filled the room with sounds of nature and migratory bird song. The sounds were punctuated during the night by intermittent jam sessions held on Tulloch’s community “porch” featuring poetry by Arsimmer McCoy and Nadia Wolf, vocals by Nadirah Naima X, movement by Iyanna the Model- music by Muzelle Lee, Claudens Louis, King Friday, Inez Barlatier and Gerald Zilas.
More than 350 guests attended the convivial Meet the Artist Reception held for the first time in Locust Projects’ new home in a reception hosted by event partner Zilberman Gallery. Among the guests were local and visiting collectors, gallerists, Miami arts leaders, past and future exhibiting artists, WaveMaker grantees, and Locust Projects Board Members. Guests enjoyed delicious wines by Justin Wine and hydration by Liquid Death.
“Waterbirds: Migratory Sound Flow” is presented with major support provided by The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation and presented as part of Knight Digital Commissions.
