Miami, FL – September 26, 2023 – In the wake of concerns about Li’i’s future following the death of his long-time companion, Lolita the orca, the Pacific white-sided dolphin has found a new home in Texas. Earlier today, the Miami Seaquarium announced the successful transport of Li’i to Seaworld San Antonio, marking the end of his years-long partnership with Lolita. Activists had raised concerns about his well-being in the outdated tank after Lolita’s passing, advocating for his relocation to another marine park or release to a seaside sanctuary.
Li’i had been at the Seaquarium since 1983, having been captured off the coast of California in the 1980s. His relocation came after Lolita’s passing, which had raised concerns about her living conditions. While some celebrated Li’i’s move, animal rights groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals criticized it, arguing that it failed to provide him the freedom of a seaside sanctuary. Miami Seaquarium defended its decision, stating that a suitable sea pen with necessary veterinary care was unavailable for Li’i due to his age and health conditions. According to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Li’i was the last Pacific white-sided dolphin at Miami Seaquarium.
