Miami, FL – June 1, 2023 – Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo has been handed a significant legal blow as a jury awarded a staggering $63.5 million in compensation to two Little Havana businessmen, William “Bill” Fuller and Martin Pinilla of the Barlington Group, who accused Carollo of abusing his authority and violating their First Amendment rights.
The jury’s decision comes after years of Carollo allegedly orchestrating a campaign to damage their reputations and target their properties in retaliation for supporting a political opponent.
Fuller referred to Carollo as a “bully” and a “coward,” highlighting the emotional toll the ordeal had taken. Meanwhile, Carollo remained stoic during the proceedings and later confirmed his plans to appeal, expressing confidence in his chances during the appellate court process.
It’s not yet been determined if Commissioner Carollo or tax payers will pay for the appeal if it occurs.
