Miami, FL – January 22, 2022 – As part of the Pegasus World Cup, Baccarat presents “Too Black Too Fast,” at The Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery in Overtown. This exhibit celebrates the history of African American Jockeys in Thoroughbred horse racing. It is open through February 13, 2022 and admission is free. On January 22nd, the Pegasus World Cup and Baccarat celebrated the opening of “Too Black Too Fast” as hosted by The Historic Ward Rooming House’s Christopher Norwood along with Mayor Levine Cava, outgoing Miami-Dade School Superintendent, School Board Member, Dr. Dorthy Bendross-Mindigall, artist Michael McBride, 1/ST & the Pegasus World Cup’s Jimmy Vargas, David Wilson, Nick Hines & James Fowell, as well as other community members. More than 200 years before Jackie Robinson took to the baseball field, Black jockeys dominated the “Sport of Kings.” As enslaved men, they were the original trainers and jockeys, as they knew the horses best. In fact, few people know that 13 of the 15 jockeys in the inaugural race of The Kentucky Derby in 1875 were African American, and African Americans won 15 of the first 28 races.
Baccarat is partnering with Pegasus World Cup to share just one of the many untold stories of Black excellence in American sports. These jockeys set the standard for the industry.
