Q&A: Breaking a Sweat with Skylar Hauswirth at MAHAM Yoga
Miami Beach, FL – February 13, 2018 – Skylar Hauswirth is founder and CEO of Miami Beach’s electrifying new health center, Maham Yoga. This high-energy, Hip Hop infused yoga studio brings a fresh urban intensity to the ancient practice of fitness and well being. The studio is a power zone of modern sound design and visual effects–like interactive walls with 3D mapping, amazing Art including an east coast vs. west coast Biggie Buddha & 2 Pac Ghandi mural to their featured “ Beyonce’ Does Yoga Here For Free” neon at the entrance. MAHAM Yoga fuses new music and innovative training with traditional discipline to create a sensual, sweaty, dance club environment for pushing your personal limit. Attracting everyone from traditional yogis, athletes of all types to runway models and the workout community you want to motivate you towards your fitness goals, MAHAM Yoga is a boutique fitness space that keeps pace with the South Beach scene, quickly becoming the local workout hangout. Not satisfied with traditional power yoga, Skylar saw a gap in the market and sought to fill it with a yoga studio built around his favorite music for his favorite people. To this he adds innovations like the first ever infrared heated high-intensity power vinyasa flow set to Hip Hop and popular music. Aesthetic studio decor includes a co-ed Steam Room, balinese style wash-rooms, and multiple showers. Their unique design for their bathrooms that include imagery of celebrities doing yoga & pop culture icons to their nostalgic lockers complete with Magazine covers of Vibe, Vogue & Sports Illustrated, to rap album covers with chargers conveniently placed inside each locker. WRE sought the opportunity to check out Miami’s hottest yoga in the heart of Miami Beach.
The power of the perfect moment. To blank out the mind- it’s a beautiful process to realize the perfection in whatever is. Life doesn’t always need to make sense. It can be powerfully simple when free of attachment.

WRE: Tell us a little bit about yourself?
SH: I grew up in Los Angeles – right in the heart of Santa Monica. I went to public and private schools and graduated from the University of Arizona’s Eller School of Management. I’ve always been a fitness nut, but started really getting into yoga when I was in high school. I was obsessed with a local studio growing up called Maha and felt really at home there. I started working in hospitality when I turned 18 and continued while working my first job in Hollywood in the fabled ICM mailroom. I quickly realized that I was drawn to the nightlife hustle, but craved the detoxifying experience provided by my yoga practice. Figuring out a way to blend the two worlds has been my mission ever since. I knew I wanted to open a yoga studio that paid homage to all of the great teachers and studios that inspired my practice. MAHAM Yoga is a cutting edge urban yoga studio and opening it has been a dream come true. I’m so excited to now be able to continuously develop new creative ways to keep everyone coming back day after day.
WRE: Who is your biggest role model in your life?
SH: My dad, Yogi D, is hands down my biggest role model. He is a legendary human being. He introduced me to yoga when I was just a kid, but has been practicing yoga and meditation himself for over 30 years. I admire him for so many reasons, but he is truly the happiest, most charismatic, unfiltered character you will ever meet. His intentions are pure and his realness will have you doubled over with laughter. YogiD does whatever moves him and gives zero fucks at all times, but he’s also very compassionate and has a heart of gold. He has a lightness and energy to him that is contagious. And he’s lived a very unique life. He was a celibate monk for seven years in the 1970s while living on a commune in Santa Barbara. He then spent about 35 years running my grandparents’ auto upholstery and commercial property business. Several years ago, he retired and moved to Bali to pursue his passions in the wellness space. He now splits his time between LA and Bali. But, his home in Bali is in a conscious community just outside of Ubud in an area called Penjiwan. Everyone living in Penjiwan is dedicated to raising and amplifying consciousness. It’s beautiful and really inspiring. My dad’s main project in Bali right now is developing a family fitness and international retreat center called Titi Batu, which is Indonesian for Stone Bridge.
WRE: Tell us about when and why you started practicing yoga?
SH: I’ve been on a fitness jag since I was a kid in Santa Monica, California. But I like to say I was raised on yoga. I was initially inspired by LA based teachers Steve Ross, Vinnie Marino, Tom Morley, Rod Stryker, and Bryan Kest before getting my RYT 200 Hour certification with Paul Toliuszis locally in Miami in 2016. To fend off excess weight as a youth as a side effect of ADD and habitual eating- I launched myself into an obsession with physical workouts, and it was my yogic like discipline that helped to balance me out. This led me to a personal training certificate with NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and a job at the famous L.A. Sports Club at just 16 years old. Although I got my yoga teacher training only two years ago, I’ve been practicing yoga religiously for more than 15 years, and I have really fond memories of my older sister and I emulating YogiD doing backbends and acro yoga as toddlers.
WRE: What inspired you to open your own studio MAHAM?
SH: There are a lot of yoga studios out there, but I saw a gap in the market for high-intensity hot power yoga with an uplifting vibe. As a fitness junkie and yoga head, I sought to create a studio where you can go and have a great time while getting your sweat on. As someone with a fairly short attention span, I also wanted a space where there was a lot of intentional visual stimulation so having art throughout the studio really speaks to me. Contemporary yoga has now entered the group fitness space, but MAHAM Yoga takes it to the next level by offering 60-minute High-Intensity infrared heated classes set to upbeat music. You get a similar high-intensity work-out when you go to iconic boutique fitness studios like Barry’s Bootcamp, Soul Cycle, and Rumble Boxing in New York City. With my hospitality background, yoga has always been the yin to my yang- a therapeutic release from the nightlife grind. I plan on throwing many daytime yoga parties with well-known DJs performing live and incorporating pop-ups during social calendar events in the future to keep MAHAM Yoga fresh.
I take anything bad as a life lesson and move forward with positivity and increased motivation. I literally have the best time of my life every day, every moment. Good energy is contagious.

WRE: What is your favorite style of yoga and why? What style yoga does MAHAM Yoga have?
SH: I love a good sweat so heated power vinyasa has always appealed to me because I find it the most detoxifying and energizing. At MAHAM Yoga, we’ve designed a 60-minute signature high-intensity yoga (HIY) vinyasa power yoga flow meant to target all of the muscles in your body and clear your mind. MAHAM’s flows challenge you to give 100% of yourself to this rigorous practice and use your breath to get through tough sequencing that is continuously changing. You will flow through powerful vinyasa sequences, relying on your breath to fuel your recovery. And we of course throw in some core and calisthenic exercises to top it off because we all benefit from tighter abs and a better beach body. You can expect to sweat your butt off in a strong invigorating power vinyasa flow class at MAHAM Yoga. We will rent you a mat, towel and water. Each class is 60-minutes. You’ll want to arrive early to get a spot and take advantage of the infrared heat in the studio, or our co-ed steam room. We keep the lights dimmed, turn the music up, and incorporate 3D mapping imagery on the walls. You are guided through the full 60 minute flow and at the end you are presented with a cold lavender infused towel to cool you down. After your class, you are welcome to stay and refuel with a juice/smoothie/snack by Wellness Grub and lounge in our outdoor patio space or hang out and continue to spa in our co-ed steam room.
WRE: What do you want yogis to takeaway after practicing at MAHAM Yoga?
SH: We want our students to feel amazing after every class they take at MAHAM Yoga. You will sweat like crazy off from the heat you generate internally and get a really powerful, low impact, total body workout. We want you to leave feeling strong, sexy, and empowered.
WRE: Do you have suggestions for people who have never practiced yoga?
SH: It’s all good. Hydrate before, during, and after class. Be sure to show up a few minutes early, but really just do your best! Newbies can set up close to the front doors for a more comfortable cool down. All classes are open to every level. The instructors will challenge you but suggest alternatives/modifications for different levels. Be sure to meet your instructor before class and let them know if you have any injuries we should be aware of so we can offer modifications.
WRE: How do you keep your clients motivated in a class at MAHAM Yoga?
SH: The music is key. Our playlists are filled with hip-hop and top 40s. Our instructors are all vibrant people and use a microphone for loud and clear high-quality instruction. We will keep you flowing and only ask that you utilize your breath for a powerful, energizing experience. The sweat is spiritual – each time you arrive on your mat, you are invited to breathe deeply, move freely, and let it all go. We emphasize a detox of the mind, body and spirit.
WRE: What does MAHAM Yoga offer that other yoga studios lack?
SH: MAHAM’s cutting edge design and bright color palate is very intentional and unique to the studio. Our aesthetic was inspired by pop-culture, and made for social media, but I want it to be a celebration. The studio space itself features lots of natural light, uses energy-efficient infrared heat, and incorporates 3D mapping projections on the walls with the goal of creating a full sensory experience. All classes are set to up-tempo playlists ranging from hip-hop to top 40 favorites. But in my opinion, the best part of the MAHAM Yoga experience comes at the end as you are lying in Shavasana. You’ve put in 55 minutes of rigorous body work and now with sweat dripping down your face, you can rest. We have our instructors and beautiful staff place cold lavender infused towels on your forehead to cool you down.
WRE: At MAHAM Yoga there is art everywhere, describe the art and what influenced your decision to have graffiti walls throughout the studio?
SH: Our graffiti walls are what gives people the greatest joy after a sweaty class. The Biggie Buddha is the leader of our MAHAM Mafia, whatever he says goes. It was a fun creation that came about when I thought yoga needed an identity face lift! I’ve been sitting in a rocking chair It feels like, always thinking of ways to push the limits in creativity so when I created the East Coast Biggie Buddha I figure we needed something from my west Coast origins and a Tupac Shakur Gandhi came to my head that my friends help me bring to life. Our Neon Sign created by Neon expressions, is our shout out to the Queen of pop culture, for the girls it’s their Diva moment, for the fellas it’s a oh damn they must have a dope squad here moment. It’s meant to be inviting, everyone has an opportunity to try us out for their first class Free & we think everyone can be just as cool as Bey…ok maybe not as cool but pretty darn close to it. The pillars in the studio have the lyrics from “Juicy”. This may sound cliche but It Was All A Dream so I made It a reality. We hope you have as much fun as we did creating and curating It.
WRE: Tell us more about the locker art at MAHAM Yoga?
SH: The Art in MAHAM is something I’m very proud of. We want to create an inviting culture based on the Like Mike mentality and pop culture/ celebrities nostalgia imagery. Anything they can do you can do too. It’s just dressed up with a fun vibe so everything from the bathrooms of celebrities doing yoga to our fridge with celebrities drinking juices on the go to our lockers with chargers of iconic magazine covers from Vibe, Sports Illustrated, and Vogue to rap album covers to remind you of your high school days offers something for all to relate to. Branding is everything (Turqoise Black White) our corporate color is our back bone foundation to the studio and was created by Hooper Designs. Look at other iconic group Fitness studios like Soul Cycle (Yellow Black White) Barrys Bootcamp (Orange Black White) or Rumble Boxing (Red Black White) . All of the hanging images have celebs sweating painted over by artists I personally know to create the Sweat MOB (Motivate Other Bosses) series, an Art Basel show we did. Everyone gave me their best rendition to hang like a gallery here so it’s super awesome to have their work here from Biggie, Beyoncé, Giancarlo Stanton, Sandra Kubicka, Nina Agdal, Rafa Nadal, Muhammad Ali and more. Artists include Alex Mijares, Sammy Zolot, Jared Shaw, Zimer, Supper Buddha & Rafa Sanchez.

WRE: You’re busy with hospitality. How do you make the time to balance both nightlife and owning MAHAM Yoga?
SH: Libby Rae, my Director of Operations. I don’t know what i would do without her. Libby has been in the health and wellness world for over 10 years, as a teacher, connector, and creator. I met her at The Standard Spa, where she was working as the Wellbeing Director & teaching yoga. Together we are curating the MAHAM Yoga studio culture, growing the tribe, and expanding for future.
WRE: What’s one important life lesson you try to share as a yoga teacher?
SH: Non-dualism, non-dualism, non-dualism. The power of the perfect moment. To blank out the mind- it’s a beautiful process to realize the perfection in whatever is. Life doesn’t always need to make sense. It can be powerfully simple when free of attachment. People wonder why I’m always so happy, so full of life, so energetic. I don’t let things bother me. I take anything bad as a life lesson and move forward with positivity and increased motivation. I literally have the best time of my life every day, every moment. Good energy is contagious. For me, it starts with letting go and being present on the mat helps create a space where you can be present.
WRE: What plans do you have for MAHAM Yoga in the future?
SH: I like to consider us the innovation factory. MAHAM Yoga social media is one of our favorite and most viewed platforms. The content will be on point, always engaging, sometimes disruptive and exciting. The wave of the future is online. We are working on live and on-demand classes with more details to come soon! Ultimately, I want to see a MAHAM Yoga in every major city: LA, NY, Chicago, and internationally in London, Paris, Capetown, Sydney. Time will tell, but I know we have something special that people will love. I’m excited for everyone to come and try it out.
