Fort Lauderdale, FL – February 14, 2018 – On Wednesday, Valentine’s Day got a little sweeter as dogs and cats from Miami-Dade County Animal Services shelter in Doral boarded a ‘Freekibble Flight to Freedom’ and were given a second chance at love and a new home on the East Coast. Funded by GreaterGood.org in partnership with Freekibble and Wings of Rescue, nearly 55 shelter animals were flown to freedom as volunteers and supporters of Yolanda Berkowitz’s animal welfare organization Friends of Miami Animals Foundation (FoMA) gathered at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. With the help of Yolanda Berkowitz, a local philanthropist and pet rescue activist who lobbied to conduct the first official transport mission out of Miami-Dade, Miami’s Freekibble Flight to Freedom brought pets to safety and away from our overcrowded shelter,. In shelters across the United States, highly adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized just because the shelters are overcrowded; in other areas, shelters have a shortage of adoptable pets. Today Berkowitz continues to fight to help Miami-Dade County’s innocent and deserving animals. Wings of Rescue’s principal, Ric Browde, and Berkowitz worked together right before Hurricane Irma hit Miami in September 2017. Berkowitz seized the opportunity to bring in Wings of Rescue to move shelter pets out of the shelter to make room for stray and abandoned animals that would no doubt present themselves before, during, and after the storm. By moving pets out to no kill shelters in the northeast, the shelter was able to hold strays for longer periods in the hopes or reuniting them with their owners and to house other homeless pets without overcrowding and putting animals more at risk. To help at-risk animals in Miami-Dade safely make it to a loving new home, please donate to this link.
