Science Art Cinema Series 1, Episode 4: Science Art Cinema Film Festival at the Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science
Miami, FL – August 31, 2017 – The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science hosted the sold-out “Science Art Cinema Series 1, Episode 4: Science Art Cinema Film Festival” in the Frost Planetarium. The event was the final and thrilling installment of a series created to celebrate science and art through the lens of film. The program put out an open call worldwide for newly created short science and science fiction films informed by art, as well as short art films informed by science and science fiction. Winners were chosen by an esteemed jury of science and art professionals that included Diliana Alexander, Filmgate Miami Executive Director; Dr. Elizabeth Losin, University of Miami Psychology Professor; Jaie Laplante, Miami Film Festival Executive Director; and Barron Sherer, Obsolete Media Miami. Guests enjoyed entertainment before the show from Buffalo Brown, along with activations by the Miami Film Festival, FilmGate Miami and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College. The program began with an introduction by fellow judges Dr. Jorge Perez-Gallego and Kevin Arrow of Frost Science, followed by remarks from Andrew Sherry, Vice President of Communications at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The evening also featured a surprise video message from actor, director and producer Christian Slater on the set of the Golden Globe Award-winning television series “Mr. Robot.” After a screening of all the film finalists, the winners were announced. First place was awarded to “Metamorphosis of Plants” by Urszula Zajaczkowska; second place was awarded to “Space James” by Michael Ruiz-Unger; and third place was awarded to “Diviner Intervention” by Emily Cussins. Science Art Cinema was made possible in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its 2014 Knight Arts Challenge.
