Miami, FL – November 9, 2016 – The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) presented its second Miami Salon talk of the season with a discussion about breaking barriers, challenging the body, and rethinking space in the world of dance as part of “ICA Performs: Michael Clark Company,” a collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA). An intimate audience of supporters and dance enthusiasts including Lydia Pinnell from Goldman Sachs, ICA Curator of Programs Gean Moreno and artist Alan Gutierrez, congregated at Ted’s for a conversation with Michael Clark, Brittany Bailey (2008 YoungArts Winner in Dance) and Alex Gartenfeld, ICA Miami Deputy Director and Chief Curator. A warm welcome by YoungArts President & CEO Carolina García Jayaram and ICA Miami Director Ellen Salpeter underlined Michael Clark Company’s highly anticipated performances, from November 17 to 21, 2016 in the YoungArts Jewel Box. Following a month-long residency on the iconic campus, new work is being created to respond to the unique architectural spirit and cultural context of the South Florida region, and will draw from Clark’s own personal musical inspirations encompassing classical, rock, punk and post-punk. During the Salon, Bailey who danced with Michael Clark Company in 2011 at the Tate Modern in London, elaborated on her practice and interest in pushing the limits as well as owning the movement of her body.  Notably a central figure in famed director Robert Wilson’s mise-en-scène for Hermès Maison Universe, Bailey was also recently featured in In Process, YoungArts’ alumni-focused program that provides artists with resources and space to conceive of new works.

The evening at Ted’s was followed by a private dinner at COYA Miami restaurant hosted by YoungArts, ICA Miami and Michael Clark Company where guests had a chance to meet the choreographer, his dancers and Bailey, and were treated to a performance by YoungArts alumni Josh Bermudez (2014 Winner in Jazz) and Justine Garcia (2016 Winner in Voice). Tickets to ICA Performs: Michael Clark Company are $15 and available here.
