Jay Scheib’s Carmen Premieres at YoungArts
Miami, FL – June 4 – 5, 2016 – The National YoungArts Foundation presented its final “Outside the Box” of the season with Jay Scheib’s Carmen. An audience of more than 800 creatives, supporters, community leaders and arts enthusiasts enjoyed this new work in development, which pays homage to Bizet’s famed opera about love, lust and betrayal. Scheib’s treatment of Carmen utilized his signature “live cinema” style, which combines theater and film for a unique viewing and immersive experience. Guests were invited to either be seated on the YoungArts Plaza with a view of the main stage and screens, or move around for a more participatory engagement with the actors and set. At the event, STARR Catering Group served up Spanish and Latin-inspired bites and cocktails; and the performance was complemented by a private reception at Ted’s in the YoungArts Tower, attended by Alyce Robertson, Tracey Corwin, Deborah Koch, David Aaron, and Mary Arda, among others.
Bringing the weekend to a close was the Salon Series discussion, sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The intimate conversation with Jay Scheib and the all-star YoungArts alumni cast explored creative inspiration, collaboration, and the making-of this contemporary, local rendition of the classic story. Donors also had the opportunity to meet director Scheib, and Carmen singer India Carney (2011, YoungArts Winner in Theater, Voice & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts), at a brunch hosted by YoungArts Corporate Partners Goldman Sachs and Coya Miami restaurant, featuring a guitar performance by Ben Pila (2002 YoungArts Winner in Music & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts). Guests in attendance included Francinelee Hand, Troy and Sissy Templeton, Laurie Mazzotta, Natalie Davis, and Jeff Camp.
